Quote Init will help you produce better-looking text on the Macintosh. It automatically changes ugly neutral quotes and apostrophes (" and ') to the more æsthetic curly quote pairs (“” and ’), keeping track of the open and close quotes for you as you type. Optionally it will also change the greek dipthongs “AE” and “OE” to “Æ” and “Œ,” and will change double dashes (--) to m-bars (—). When using Laserwriter™ fonts, you can also have it change the (fi) and (fl) combinations to more attractive single characters that are available in those fonts only. There is even an option to suppress the double spaces at the end of sentences that most typists put in but which looks wrong in proportional fonts. Each option can be turned on and off using the checkboxes in the control panel. You can also turn them on and off directly from the keyboard using the command-shift- “character” combination of your choice (a beep acknowledges your command).
